Ten Things I Think I Think About Parenting After Eight Months

Hello Friends and Family,

It is once again time for my monthly hot takes on parenting. As a reminder, each month for the first year of Mills’ life I am going to put some initial thoughts down about parenting in real time.

I might be completely wrong about some or all of these, but here’s where I am today after eight months.

Ten Things I Think I Think About Parenting After Eight Months

  1. Introducing allergens is the most nervous I have been as a parent. That window of time between introducing the allergen and when the reaction might happen is nerve-racking.

  2. Take kids outside as much as possible. Mills has spent a great deal of time outside and we can tell he is already comfortable with the sights and sounds of cars, wind, trees, heat, cold, rain, and snow. Not only that, but when he’s really fussy, just getting him outside in the sunshine helps tremendously.

  1. Watching the Super Bowl in the waiting room of the emergency room at the hospital is not an ideal way to watch the Super Bowl. Mills had an ear infection and a high temperature, so we loaded up the car right as the national anthem was starting and didn’t leave the hospital until the last drive of the game.

  1. There is no possible way to prepare yourself to have a child that is your twin. None.

  1. There are only two ways to make a baby take medicine: 1) Two adults tag team the baby. 2) Create a straight jacket.

  1. The temptation to save every single art project is overwhelming, even when it is clear that his teachers made the art project. Resist the temptation, no one needs that much construction paper in their lives.

  1. Enjoying every stage of Mill’s development has been the best decision we have made. We are sad as he makes the transition, but we never find ourselves longing for him to stop growing and changing.

  1. Getting out of the house is worth it, even though it takes military level planning and execution. Mills doesn’t need to sit around the house and he definitely doesn’t need to sit around the house because his parents are too lazy to pack up some diapers and food.

  1. Seriously. Get your kids a pet.
